Guide · Shopify to Amazon

Should your Shopify brand sell on Amazon? A decision checklist

Your Shopify brand should sell on Amazon if shoppers already search there for products like yours, your margin survives Amazon's fees and launch ads, you can register your trademark, and you can keep FBA in stock. If two or more of those fail, fix them first. This checklist covers ten questions.

The ten questions

#QuestionGreen light if
1Do people search Amazon for products like yours?Generic terms for your product show many competing listings with reviews.
2Is your brand already on Amazon without you?Yes is common, and a reason to act.
3What is your margin after fees and ads?Positive at your planned price with launch ad spend included.
4Do you have a trademark?Registered or pending, so you can join Brand Registry.
5Can you keep stock in FBA?You can fund 2 to 3 months of Amazon inventory.
6Will Amazon pricing hurt Shopify? You can keep price parity or Shopify-only offers.
7Is your category restricted? No approval needed, or you can meet the requirements.
8Do your reviews and product quality hold up?Low return rate and strong Shopify reviews.
9Who will answer Amazon messages?Someone can reply within 24 hours, seven days a week.
10Who will run the account? An in-house person or an agency with Amazon experience.

What if my margin does not work on Amazon?

Look at bundles or larger pack sizes, which spread the fixed fulfillment fee over a higher price. Review packaging to drop into a cheaper size tier. Consider launching only the SKUs that work. And remember that a lower Amazon margin can still be worth it if Amazon brings customers you would never reach on Shopify.

What if resellers already sell my products on Amazon?

That is a reason to move sooner. Without your own presence, resellers decide your price, images and customer experience. With Brand Registry you can take control of the listings and report infringements.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Will Amazon steal my customers?

Amazon owns the customer relationship for Amazon orders, so you cannot market to those buyers directly. Most brands accept this in exchange for reach, and keep loyalty programs and exclusive products on Shopify.

Can small Shopify brands succeed on Amazon?

Yes, if the product is differentiated and the margin works. Starting with a few best sellers keeps the risk low.
